This exceptional museum is housed in an impressive building of modern times. It gives visitors of every age a fascinating insight into Derby's history and heritage.
The museum, covering several floors and galleries illustrates with flair and imagination every aspect of Derby's history including the early geology of the landscape, and wildlife.
The Arts are well represented, there are attractive displays of the paintings of Derbyshire artist Joseph Wright and a Worldwide acclaimed collection of Derby porcelain is beautifully exhibited. There are many other magnificent pieces including superb clocks by John Whitehurst.
There is much important Militaria on show to do with the life and times of the counties illustrious Regiments, this covers their history and campaigns. Included in this section is a fascinating display focusing on the Jacobite uprising, when Bonnie Prince Charlie attempted to seize the throne.
In the Geology and Wildlife section visitors can explore a walk-in cave, enjoy hands-on experiences and see stunning settings depicting the natural habitation of the regions wealth of wildlife.
A gallery dedicated to Archaeology shows finds from the Stone-Age to the Middle-Ages, with important Anglo-Saxon relics and a splendid sarcophagus. There is also the fascination of two Egyptian mummies.
There is a shop for souvenirs, and for the comfort of visitors there are other more general facilities.
